A Coffee Cup Runneth Over
By Sherri Viner

Wyoming, MI – Local coffee shop is holding a benefit event to give back to one of their patrons. One year ago, James Viner started routinely stopping in at a BIGGBY Coffee store on his way to work where he is an active duty Army recruiter. During the course of his morning visits, James began to get to know the owner, Michelle Willis. They would have many small conversations and like any proud parent, James would often take the opportunity to talk about his newborn son, Nicholas. Michelle says “although BIGGBY Coffee is a franchise, I run my store more like a small mom and pop operation. Over the last year I have gotten to know some fantastic people and their life stories; including the Viner family.”
As their conversations continued, James would share more about his family and Michelle would soon learn that Nicholas was born with a condition called heterotaxy syndrome along with complex heart defects. Heterotaxy syndrome affects 1 in 10,000 and can cause organs to form on the opposite side of the body. The liver, lungs, intestines, and spleen are commonly effected but usually all cases involve heart defects of varying types and severity.
In Nicholas’ case, he was born with a very complex heart, right sided stomach, mid-line liver, intestinal anomalies, and without a spleen. In his short 8 months of life, Nicholas has already undergone a stomach surgery and two open heart surgeries at Helen DeVos Children’s Hospital. “Jim comes into my store daily and you can't help but to want to help him and his wife as well as others going through this. I started talking to them trying to figure out how I could help; that's when we decided to do the fundraiser event” says Willis.
The event will benefit the nonprofit organization that James and Sherri Viner started in their son’s name, Nicholas Viner Heart Foundation. The organization was founded a year ago so that they could spread awareness and help others in the heterotaxy and heart communities. James says “life to me is all about faith, family, and making meaningful connections with others. As I’ve become older, or should I say wiser, I’ve come to realize the importance and truth behind “it takes a village”. I’m so thankful that Michelle and her store is a part of our village, the coffee and caffeine is definitely an added perk though.”
The event will be held on Saturday, April 30th from 5pm to 8:30pm. The Night will be filled with live music featuring a harpist and a string quartet along with some fun giveaways. $1.00 of every drink purchase during the event will be donated to the Nicholas Viner Heart Foundation.
